Her teacher sent her home with the assignment of disguising a turkey so that no one could find it and cook it.

We were playing outside yesterday and picked up a bunch of pretty leaves. I thought one of them looked sort of like a fish head, so we started making leaf creatures with them. We used glue on both sides of the leaves to kind of preserve them. I don’t know if it will work, though. I guess only time will tell.

To make your own leaf creatures, all you need is imagination, white craft glue, leaves, googly eyes and construction paper to glue the critters to. This seems like a really good craft idea for Thanksgiving, since a maple leaf looks kind of like a turkey tail.

Update: After we made our projects, I was looking for other fall craft ideas for Thanksgiving and came across an entire book on making leafy critters:

This quick and easy printable Thanksgiving craft idea is suitable for preschoolers. After you print out the coloring sheet, tear some brown construction paper into small pieces. Have them glue it to the top of the acorn to simulate the rough texture and brown coloring of a real acorn. Then, let them draw a face on the acorn. Older children may prefer to use googly eyes.

Once the children are finished decorating their acorns, have them write what they are thankful for in the space provided.

Are you looking for some fun ways to keep your kids busy during the Thanksgiving holiday? Here are some fun Thanksgiving kids’ crafts they can make:

Turkey wreath – Buy a straw wreath and various Thanksgiving decorations, let your kids glue on the decorations to make a holiday wreath to hang on your front door.

Turkey cups – With the Thanksgiving family dinner coming soon, you’ll probably have a house full of kids. This simple kids’ craft is useful and fun. Buy small kid-sized plastic cups and craft markers. Give each kid a cup and let them write their name on it and decorate it.

Turkey placemats – Give your kids colored construction paper and let them make turkeys. After they are finished, mount each turkey on a separate sheet of construction paper, then laminate it. Now they have their own special turkey placemat.

Pinecone turkey – Gather pinecones, then cut out colorful turkey feathers from colored construction paper. Use red felt to cut out the turkey’s comb. Glue your Thanksgiving turkey together, inserting the feathers in between the pine comb leaves.

Thanksgiving flower pots – Buy the smallest red clay pots you can find at your local gardening store (these are super cheap), a bag of potting soil, and packages of various flowers, vegetables, or herb seeds. For this craft, let your kids write the name of the seed on the outside of the pot with a magic marker. Next, have them pour potting soil in each pot and plant the seeds. When the seeds begin sprouting in a few weeks, let your kids take their Thanksgiving pots to the local nursing home and give them away as Thanksgiving gifts to the patients.

One of the simplest Thanksgiving crafts children can make is a handprint turkey. For this craft, your child will need a piece of paper, crayons, feathers, and glue.

Directions:
1. Have your child place his hand with his fingers and thumb spread apart in the center of the paper.
2. Then, have him trace around his hand.
3. Draw a beak and an eye on the thumb tracing to create a turkey face.
4. Color the turkey’s body.
5. Glue feathers to the finger tracings to create the turkey’s tail.

For even more Thanksgiving fun, have your children make several hand turkeys, cut them out, leaving a two inch wide and four inch long strip of paper attached to the base of the turkey. Then, glue a strip of cardboard to the back of the turkey. Bend two inches of the paper strip back to form an inverted L. Now, you can use the turkeys as place cards when you set the table for Thanksgiving dinner.
