August 15th is the August Moon Festival. Since there aren’t a lot of fun holidays to celebrate in August, we decided to make a few moon crafts. One really simple, but fun, craft is to cut a paper plate to make a moon shape. Crumple up little squares of yellow tissue paper and glue them onto the plate until it is completely covered in little yellow craters. If you want to give your moon some personality, glue on a googley eye or a button eye.

Another fun moon activity will take a month to complete – go outside each night and take a picture of the moon if it is visible. At the end of the month, print all your photos and make a moon phase booklet. More artistic children may prefer to make a drawing or painting of what the moon looks like each night, instead.

Does anyone else have ideas for moon crafts or activities?

I saw the cutest thing on the Inspireco blog today. A little fairy door that you can put in your house. That gave me an idea for a summer celebration. Why not have a Fairy Day? Early in the morning, install the door. (If you don’t care whether it opens or not, you can install it with a piece of duct tape, but it is way cooler to install it somewhere where it can actually open into a little room made from a large shadow box so the fairy’s “house” can be furnished.) When the kids wake up, mention that it seems you have a visitor and show them the door. The kit also comes with a bike that you could lean nearby.

Have the kids make furniture or other little fairy gifts. Make a tea party and leave a tiny cup of juice (nectar) by the fairy’s door so she can participate. The key here is to empty the cup or move the gifts into the fairy’s home when the children are distracted. This way, the fairy seems more likely to actually be there.

To expand the holiday, you can set up quite a few other activities. Watching movies with fairies in them, such as Peter Pan, coloring fairy themed coloring pages and making their own fairy costumes are all ways to add to the fun.

Looking for some ways to entertain your kids this summer? Our gang went to the craft store the other day and bought face paints. They are covered in face painting designs – maybe I should call it arm, leg and face painting? Anyway, here are a few of the designs my family painted on them:

Recommended Resource:
This comprehensive e-guide to face painting is perfect for teens. Once your son or daughter practices on younger siblings a few times, he or she can make a bit of pocket change by setting up a summer face painting business for birthday parties. (I always was one of those teens who liked to do my own thing during the summer instead of putting on a fast food uniform, so I immediately think, “Ooooh, I should have tried that to make money!” when I see something like this.)

The 4th of July is a big holiday in the United States. Independence Day festivities include fireworks, picnic dinners and pool parties. Of course, handing the kids a handful of fireworks is not the safest idea, but they love to join in the explosive fun. Poppers are a fairly kid friendly way for your younger children to make a racket, but they often aren’t exciting enough for older kids. Here are a few ideas for explosions that are fun for older kids and can even double as a science activity for homeschoolers:

* Get a package of Mentos and a 2 liter bottle of Coke. Open the Coke bottle, unwrap the Mentos and drop them in fast. Step back or you will be covered in sticky mess when the Coke explodes from the bottle in a fountain several feet high.
* Find some old fashioned plastic film containers (the black ones, not the clear ones) and alka seltzer tablets. Fill the canisters about halfway with hot water, drop in a quarter of a tablet and replace the lids. Turn the containers over and watch them blast off. These rockets are soo much fun.

Anyone else have any explosive ideas for the July 4th holiday?

Memorial Day is a great time to break out the grill, but it also has another purpose-honoring several hundred years of brave men and women who fought and died to keep our country safe from tyrants and bullies. Here are a few Memorial Day craft ideas for kids:

Flag cake – Bake up a cake mix in a rectangular pan and hand your kids the toppings to turn the cake into a flag. Strawberries, whipped cream and blueberries are all you need. Cover the whole cake top with whipped cream. Partition off a square in the upper left corner for the blueberries. Divide the rest of the cake into horizontal stripes and fill every other stripe with strawberries.

Flag hand – Trace around your child’s hand to make a flag outline. The hand should be positioned so that the fingers are pressed together and the thumb is pointing towards the bottom of the page. Cut out the hand shape and decorate the flags with star stickers and crayons. Make just one or make thirty or so and turn them into a flag hand banner.

Make a Memorial Day memory booklet about a family member or friend who died serving our nation and what he or she means to your family. Deliver the booklet to a close relative of that person on Memorial Day.
