Chinese New Year Ideas

2007 is the Year of the Boar. That means all of those cute pig crafts you love are perfect for this celebration!

  • If you can get someone to make a bunch of pig die cuts, you can make a Year of the Boar garland. Just glue ribbon to the back of the pigs and tie each one to a long Chinese red ribbon base.
  • Make pig puppets by gluing the pig cut outs to a popsicle stick. To make this craft special, decorate the pigs first. We glitter glued 2007 on our pigs’ sides and gave them googley eyes.
  • Make pig thumbprints using fingerpaints or washable rubber stamp ink pads. Just ink up your thumb and press it down. Then, draw a curly tail, little stick legs, ears, eyes and a mouth on the print.

I”ll post a list of great Chinese New Year themed books to read shortly. I’m using them to do a story time and I want to try them out first to make sure the kids like them before I recommend them.

If you have any ideas for making Chinese New Year fun, please share them in the comments. I love new projects and so do the kids.

Easter Egg Holder Craft

Ok, I know Valentine’s Day isn’t even past, but we were unpacking the eggs and I suddenly thought of a way to use the cartons. (I hate to throw things like that out…) We made a bunch of these little individual egg cups for our Easter eggs, but this one is my nephew’s favorite.

To make them, you will need an egg carton, scissors, a hole punch, yarn or pipe cleaners, paint or ink pads, and embellishments. Cut out each egg carton piece and even out the edges. Then paint the outside of the carton pieces. It was so late that I didn’t want to pull out the paints, so we rubbed nontoxic ink pads on ours.

Once the paint is dry, its time for the fun part. Punch two holes in the carton pieces so you have a place to tie your yarn or pipe cleaner handles. Once the handles are on, you can start decorating your egg cups. Stickers, little flowers, glitter glue, charms-you can use almost anything.
