Groundhog Day Craft Idea

Posted on Tuesday 31 January 2006

One easy Groundhog Day craft idea that costs very little is to make your own groundhog in a hole. Some versions of this craft use a cup, but we couldn’t find green paper cups and made our own version.

You will need:
brown construction paper
green construction paper
toilet paper tube
tongue depressor
scissors
glue stick

To make it:
1. Cut a piece of green construction paper in half lengthwise and then widthwise. This gives you a piece of paper the perfect size to cover your toilet paper tube.
2. Glue the green paper onto the toilet paper tube.
3. Optional step: Cut out a circle of green paper and cut a slit in the middle that is just big enough to allow the tongue depressor to slide in. Glue or tape the circle to the bottom of the toilet paper tube. This keeps the groundhog from coming out of the tube.
4. Draw a groundhog on the brown construction paper and cut him out.
5. Glue the groundhog to one end of the tongue depressor.
6. Insert the groundhog on the tongue depressor into the tube. The end of the tongue depressor without the groundhog on it will stick out the bottom of the tube.
7. Push the tongue depressor up until the groundhog looks out of the top of the tube. If he makes a shadow, slide him back in.

Christmas Centerpiece Craft Idea

Posted on Wednesday 25 January 2006

This simple Christmas centerpiece is easy to make, looks great, and smells terrific. I actually use mine all year round.
You will need:
Large glass vase (approximately 10 inches high and 7 inches across)
Bag of potpouri
Small string of clear Christmas lights (50 lights or fewer)
To make it:
Insert the string of lights into the vase, leaving the plug end out. Pour in the potpouri, arranging it so that it hides most of the light cording. Now, plug in the lights. They will give off enough heat to gently warm the potpouri, filling the air with a wonderful fragrance. In addition, they will sparkle through the petals and decorative bits of dried foliage and look fabulous.

Ideas for Pig Day

Posted on Monday 23 January 2006

Pig day is celebrated on March 1st. This is a holiday you can have a lot of fun with. We begin celebrating by reading IF YOU GIVE A PIG A PANCAKE by Laura Numeroff. Then, we make pig pancakes by pouring batter in a pig shaped cookie cutter.

There are a ton of cute pig craft ideas. My favorite is to have the kids make a thumbprint using pink ink and then draw ears, feet, a tail and a face on the print to turn it into a pig.
